Following on in our series of myths and legends in the safety areas of the construction industry, the latest tales centre on cables and their outer sheathing. Our friends at Webro have unearthed some interesting insights into the latest scaremongering. The scares relate to the latest European Harmonisation moves and BS EN rules for the construction industry.
This is the most talked about of a number of rumours about how the ‘Construction Project Regulations’ (CPR) affect the cable industry. Webro feel it is highly unlikely that PVC sheathing will be banned. It is true, that other sheathing materials such as Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) might be better for certain projects, but Webro insist decisions like this need to be taken in context on a case by case basis.
There are a lot of PVC-based items within an individual building, not just cable. It is unlikely UPVC windows (for example), will be banned, so PVC-sheathed cables are likely to remain in use too.
